Abstract

This paper deals with results of the discussion about the possibility or impossibility of applying the procedure of verification to theological statements. This debate took place over 50 years ago in a broader context of the problem whether there reliable criteria for the validation of results of scientific research exist. In order to give the correct answer, one ought to clarify certain issues: 1) Within the framework of what type of scientific rationality is the procedure of verification being carried out? 2) What kind of ideas about the nature of the truth does the researcher follow? 3) What type of theology is implied in each particular case? The recent idea that theology is the "science about the faith of the Church" may open new perspectives in the controversy about the verifiability of theological statements and may lead to a fruitful academic dialogue. However, theologians need to carry out considerable work in order to specify the place of these new ideas in the current convention on scientific rationality.
