Abstract

The works of the Danish classic of Slavic studies A. Stender-Petersen, published in the 1930s and 1950s, have not lost their relevance. The initial plots of Russian history (the chronicle deeds of the first princes, the vocation of the Varangians, the campaigns against Tsargrad) are considered in a context not limited by the one-sided problem of the Varangian influence on this history. The author sought to understand the initial Russian history from the standpoint of cultural interaction of the Slavs, Khazars, Scandinavians and the Byzantine Empire. This approach contributes not only to the understanding of the role of the Varangians in the creation of a system of transcontinental communications, but also to the fruitful development of the search for the historical principle in book plots.
