Abstract

Nowadays the role of data journalism is becoming increasingly important in the USA. This thesis is confirmed by the growing number of educational programs and trainings at universities annually, the steadily increasing number of resonant data projects, and the growing popularity of data journalism among reporters and readers themselves. One of the reasons for the increasing influence of data journalism is the audience’s need for an “assistant” who could interpret a large amount of information, analyze it and present it in a convenient form for perception. Such “assistant” in the media is a data journalist who focused on the creation of analytical material based on the selection and systematization of Big Data. Accordingly, it is subject to increased requirements, which include programming skills, graphic design, the ability to work in certain computer programs.

The article is devoted to the study of the current state of data journalism, the analysis of the portrait of a modern data journalist with a detailed analysis of the necessary skills, a review of training courses for such specialists, the characteristics of media resources that publish data materials on their pages, and the characteristics of American data projects.
