- Abstract
- The essay considers the history of scientifi c instrument design and manufacturing at the Soviet Academy of Sciences from 1936 onwards. In particular, the authors focus on the experimental workshop of the TEKhSNAB (the technology supply agency of the Academy) and its subsequent reorganization into the Central Bureau for Special Instrumentation, which eventually became the Scientifi c and Technological Center for Special Instrumentation. The study describes the role played by the instruments designed at the Bureau/Center in scientifi c investigations by the Academy's research institutes.
